Meade 14" ACF LX850 Telescope - ME-1408-85-01
The Meade LX-850 combines a fast f/8 ACF™ optical system with high-contrast baffling, a sturdy, fully-computerized GoTo German Equatorial Mount and the innovative StarLock technology, to bring you the smartest and most comprehensive Astro-Imaging equipment available!
Based on the award-winning ACF (Advanced Coma-Free) optical design, Meade has made the LX850 optical tubes faster and shaper. At only f/8, exposure times are dramatically shortened. High contrast baffling yields crisp images from edge to edge. Adding to the crystal-clear view, an internal micro focuser offers two speeds of control at a 10:1 ratio and with an ultra-solid connection to the primary mirror the need for a mirror lock is eliminated.
With a 90-pound instrument load capacity, the Meade LX850 German Equatorial Mount is constructed of machined stainless steel and aircraft grade aluminum. This robust, top-grade mount is also equipped with a fully computerized GoTo system with included GPS and includes a database of over 144,000 celestial objects, taking you anywhere you wish to go!
- f/8 ACF™ Optical System- ensures crisp, pinpoint imaging to the very edge of the field. Also features an internal Crayford-style, zero image-shift focusing system with a two-speed, 7:1 control.
- StarLock Technology- centers your target in the eyepiece and track with arcsecond accuracy so you can concentrate on the beautiful, wide fields of pinpoint stars created by the superb f/8 ACF optical system.
- AutoStar® II GoTo System- puts over 140,000 objects at your fingertips and delivers the fastest GoTo performance available.
- LX-850 German EQ Mount- A 1.75 in. stainless steel right accession shaft ensures extra durability while the brass worm gears and 225 tooth aluminum gears ensure smooth and precise torque. Also has the muscle to easily carry large OTA and heavy imaging systems.
- GPS- Built-in Sony GPS sensor determines your prices date, time and location for precise alignment.
Advanced Coma-Free Optics (ACF)
Building from a classic RC design, Meade created a new design with coma-free pinpoint star images and flatter field. The ACF design reduces astigmatism and eliminates dffraction spikes found in classical RCs. TheACF is the perfect plattfor for the demanding researcher and imaging enthusiast with telescopes available in aperture of 6-inches, 8-inches,10-inches, 12-inches, 14-inches, and 16-inches
AutoStar II equipped telescopes contain a database of over 144,000 night sky treasure and is by the larges collection of target in the commercial telescope industry. Telescope equiped with AutoStar II hand controller include features like GoTo Capability, GPS, Smart Mount, Flexure mapping, custome guided tours, and varios other advanced features.
Smart Drive, or permanent periodic error correction, permits a professional level of drive-trate precision. The significant value of the Smart Drive is immediately appreciated during long-exposure astrophotography, where the resultant lower periodic error of the system enables improved tracking while minimizing guide corrections"
Smart Mount improves the pointing accuracy of your telescope "GoTo: system. Despite Careful efforts to reduce mount flexure and improve pointing accuracy, telescopes may still fail to precisely center objects. Smart Mount allows your telescope to learn about, and then correct for, any systematic pointing errors, regardless of the cause. Smart mount is recommended for use with permanently mounted telescopes."
This revolutionary new technology Makes target acquisition and accurate guiding completely automatic. Provides computer assisted polar drift alignment using an f/5 80mm optic and two camera sensor system. Starlock automatically programs periodic error correction achieving guiding accuracy up to 1 arc-second and can guide on stars as faint as 11th magnitude
Ultra-High Transmission Coatings (UHTC)
Specialized Multi-layered coating that are preciesely designed to improve the performance of your telescopes optics. You'll see brighter star clusters, more fine details in nebulas, and more surface features on planets with UHTC than without. Averaged over the entire visible spectrum, total light transmission to the focus increases by 15%.

OPT is an amazing company full of very intelligent and helpful staff. Meade however is not so much. The telescope was a lemon right out of the box. Had major issues with the hand controller. Took Meade 4 months to get me a new one. Finally did, same issue. Letters were illegible when it’s scrolling. Slowed it down, that helped a little bit take FOREVER to see what it’s telling you. Next thing that happened was the starlock quit working. Had two custom wires made to meades specs because the are back ordered for 3-4 weeks, a cable, no success. Starlock is busted. Have to send it back to Meade with the control box to fix the scrolling issue because it’s probably a code error. 6-8 weeks to repair this!!! I paid close to 11k for this telescope and expect it to perform like an 11k piece of equipment. My viewing/imaging nights are very limited. I live in the city of SF and need the expensive stuff I buy to work how it’s supposed to when I need it to. I did not buy this telescope from OPT but it was still drop shipped from Meade, so maybe this will get deleted. Just don’t won’t others to have my same experience. Go with a better mount. Losmandy, astrophysics, etc etc. don’t waste the money!
It’s a great setup, and for the money/features/user experience it seems hard to beat. I have had some issues with mine however. The star lock has not worked properly, and there were issues with the guiding. Overall it is an expensive setup, but to do this all al a carte with this level of performance would be hard and much more expensive. So I feel its worth the money, no matter how difficult the kinks can be to work out.
Received as advertised. The telescope was drop shipped directly from Meade Instruments. It arrived on time, packaging was very good, each box marked, sealed and certified by Meade. I have assembled the unit and tested indoors, but have not been able to use it adequately due to a rather long streak of bad weather. I will update once I get a couple of nights with clear skies.
