For some time, the reticle illuminator that I got when I first purchased my Meade 8" SCT had not worked. The on-off switch simply rotated without turning it off or on and this forced me to use, on some evenings when using my scope, indirect lighting - skimming the light from a dim flashlight for example - to show the cross-hairs of the finderscope for aiming. So, when I saw this, I thought I would give it a try. It looked nearly identical and turned out is was, though of a more recent design. To date, it works great and my finderscope once again is a useful tool on my scope.
All my astrophotography is done in the field with on-the-spot set ups. Rapid polar alignment is essential and I don't want to waste a lot of time getting close with the polar scope before doing a drift alignment. The features of this illuminator make the use of the polar scope much faster (you can see what you are doing easier). Quite an improvement over other illuminators.
