Pentax XW Optical Coatings

High-Grade Optics

The high-performance XW-series optics incorporates high-refraction, extra-low-dispersion lanthanum glass elements to produce a well-balanced image with minimal aberrations. These eyepieces were designed to reduce the disturbing blackout effect by compensating the spherical aberration of the pupil.

All lens surfaces that come in contact with air are treated with the original multi-layer coating, while all laminated surfaces are treated with the innovative partial coating, to offer the light transmission efficiency of more than 90 percent (an astonishing 96 percent at 550nm) over the visible light spectrum.

Weatherproof Construction

The XW series features JIS Class 4 weatherproof construction,* making it possible to use it in drizzle or under night dew.

* The XW-series eyepieces are not designed for underwater use and should not be submerged under water.

I purchased my very first PENTAX eyepeice almost a year ago, January 2012. I already owned a Tele-Vue 9 & 13mm Nagler with great magnification and FOV so thats why I purchased this 10mm PENTAX to complete my medium power eyepeice collection. I have viewed objects throughout the year near the horizon and at zenith and I was impressed with the clarity especially. Since I favor deep sky objects, I used this eyepeice on globular clusters with high magnitudes and I saw very good and crystal clear star imagery. I'm still working with the adjustable eye-relief collar, and sometimes I have to move it in or out. Haven't quite found that sweet spot for perfect eyeball position yet, but that's a minor issue. Quality wise, it's a very good investment and addition to my prized eyepeice collection. I'm very happy with the FOV and resolving power capability. Just last night I used this eyepeice on objects like M67, M35, and NGC 2360 & 62. (mostly viewed near zenith With my 90's SUPER POLARIS C8!!! Since I owned lots of Tele-Vue eyepeices, I already knew what I would expect and what I needed to see with a 10mm wide field eyepeice and I'm very happy I made the purchase. One thing to keep in mind This is a port hole eyepeice in that the surface area of the exit pupil is HUGE! So it take a while to find the best viewing position to place the eyeball in this eyepeice... you pretty much have to be dead centered with viewing objects or it will black out on you and you won't see a thing. I do miss the roll-up eyeguards as with Tele-Vue has built into theres but the pluses out weigh the minuses! I like the craftmanship and superior lens coatings as well. It look heavier than it is but in time, this will be my next all around medium power eyepeice that I plan to use along side my 15mm (widefield Tele-Vue for starting out the night's viewing. I'm glad I purchased my PENTAX 10mm before it became BACK-ORDERED :

Unbelievable Sharpness & Build Quality!

You won't believe your eyes when you point this eyepiece to DSOs and especially globular clusters!!! The sharpness it exhibits is simply breathtaking and the view is so pleasant that has to be seen to be believed!! This eyepiece has no rival in its class, I replaced a Nagler 9mm T6 for it and I'm so glad I did!! The views cannot be compared! Sooo much sharper, comfortable with 20mm of eye-relief, a real champion in a class of its own. Eye placement is somewhat critical to avoid blackouts (due to the long eye-relief but can be easily achieved, no problem. I have a 12 f5 dob and I can't wait till I get my hands on the 7mm XW and the 5mm too! Don't think about it and don't hesitate...It just doesn't get any better than this...not to mention the AMAZING build quality it carries with it..A winner in ALL aspects!!!! When you experience the clarity of the stars it shows...you will be jaw-dropped and hooked at the same time!!!

Absolutely premium eyepiece

I have a 12 F/5 Dob. This means that my best observing will be done with 20mm-10mm eyepieces. My wishlist was long I wanted a 10mm eyepiece with a wide AFOV, 20mm of eye relief (since I must use glasses while observing due to my astigmatism, absolute clarity and pinpoint stars right to the very edge. All this with the challenge of a fast scope. After reading many favourable reviews I decided to take a punt on the Pentax XW. I'm extremely pleased that I did. This eyepiece is superb and my favourite EP. The whole thing cries out QUALITY, from the tapered barrel (which makes insertion in the focuser easier to the superior design of the lens cap and the elegant syling and finish of the body. I tend to use it for everything except those open clusters, etc, which won't fit in the FOV. Even then I take a peak so that I can appreciate how the Diamond Cluster really does look like diamonds! Once you have an object like 47 Tucanae centered, only mosquitos will drive you from the observing chair. That it can pick out tiny stars in GCs like this is great. No matter how I try to catch the edge of the moon near the field stop I can see no edge colour. Unlike some other premium eyepieces there is no kidney-beaning. I can never see myself parting with this eyepiece.

Perfection

The Contrast is just the best I have seen. I have naglers too, but Pentax are just better in my Takahashi. The moon is not yello like Naglers, but pure white.

Perfection in glass

Finest view available. Contrast, sharpness and light through put are flawless to the edges. Superior twist up eyeguard is comfortable and easy. Built to last forever. Only 70* FOV if it matters to you. All the XW's are alike with the exception of the 14mm which exhibits mild but noticeable curvature at the outer 30% of FOV. My favorite glass but I also own Televue's to fill in the gaps. Every one can see through these without having to learn how too as with naglers.
