Product Details

  • The SolarMax III (SMIII) is a 70 mm f/5.7 refractor equipped with 60 mm external hydrogen – alpha (H-α) filters (solar filters). Available in both single-stacked (<0.7 Å) and double-stacked (<0.5 Å) bandpasses and either 10 mm or 15 mm blocking filters.

Experience darker backgrounds, sharper features, and higher contrast with the new SolarMax III series telescope. Get precise focus with its new user-friendly, two-speedrack-and-pinion focuser which comes with both coarse and fine focus controls. Additionally, the SMIII 70 mm includes external “True” H-α etalon filters giving higher contrast views and sharper features.

    RichView Tuning

Coronado’s patented RichView tuning allows direct tuning of the primary etalon filter. The patented RichView tuning technology provides additional tuning range and an overall better way of adjusting the filter’s bandpass. Now you can tune for the highest contrast views of your favorite solar features without sacrificing image quality.

    Double-Stack Option

Double Stacked models (<0.5 Å bandpass) include two “True” external etalon filters. One etalon filter equipped with our patented RichView tuner and second etalon with tip-tilt tuning using Coronado’s T-Max tuner.  Since both etalon filters are now external to the telescope, you can easily remove both filters and rear blocking filter diagonal to use the scope as a normal refractor for night time astronomy. It’s like having two scopes in one! Whether you are focusing on the solar edge or surface of features in the chromosphere, the SolarMax III 70 mm will give you breathtaking views.

NOTE: Always point the telescope away from the Sun while removing filters. Never view the Sun without proper filter protection.

    Excellent Scope,But Need QC Improvement.

When I recive first scope,It has serverly QC issue,One of the etalon spacers has become loose and the filter off-band, the etalon plates (mirrors) are no longer parallel and I got a multitude of off-band images similar to two mirrors facing each other at an amusement park "fun house." Thanks to the OPT service,The secend scope I got is perfect.

Still new with the telescope but the first two initial observations (of course, cloudy weather the entire two weeks after receiving) was excellent. Sharp images, much better focusing method than the older models and great build quality. Still working out how to use it precisely and figure out if there are any bugs, but so far, none. Shipped and packed perfectly, no damage at all. The carry case is a great accessory for such a fragile instrument, should be required for all scopes really. Much sharper image, more contrast and a lot brighter than the PSTs I've used in the past and a much better image than the previous versions (40, 60mm II). Looking to do some imaging with it sometime soon when the skies return but if there are any issues, I'll attempt an update.

    SolarMax 3 70/400 DS BF15

Fast respons, perfect tracking possibility, delivery as planned; no payment issues. What about the scope. Before I had a PST40 and decided to be loyal to the brand Coronado. The reason for SolarMax 3 was both the choice of the newest scope and price. Package was received intact - two inner cartons and one metal box. No damages encountered. First light was a couple of days later when sun came out. Double stack is easy and in comparison with PST40 it's just awesome. Today i made pictures using ZWO ASI224MC and also those are beyond expectations. Based on my first impressions, I'm very please with this purchase.
