Baader 8mm Hyperion Modular Eyepeice
What I love about this EP is its modular design that allows you to change the effective focal length of the EP by extending the tube length with Baader's "Fine Tuning" rings. As a result, this EP morphs in a 6mm, 5mm and 4mm EP. Perfect for high power with my Explore Scientific AR 127mm refactor. Take off the bottom barrel that houses 2 lens and the EP becomes a 2" 22MM EP. So much versatility! In addition it has 20 mm eye relief & 68 degree FOV and an eye lens that is 1.25" across! Highly recommend this EP.
Best Bang for the Buck
Ok, they are no naglers, BUT what a bang for the buck! I had read that the 8mm had bad distortion at the edges, but it out performs even my Mead 5ooo super plosl and I love that I can change it between my 2 scopes (a 2 and a 1.25 focusers without haveing to add any adaptors. This eyepiece still gives me great views even when barlowed 2X. I have only had one chance so far to try it out, but tried it in both my 16LB and my 8 CPC. A great eyepiece in both scopes. Not quite a Pan, but far from their cost. These are the best eyepieces for the money out there. I'll be picking up the whole set as I can scrounge up the money. I'll let you know how they do in my 13 as soon as I get a chance to try them out in this fast scope too. My 13 tears up most eyepieces with bad coma, I can't wait to see the improvement in the views with these eyepieces. I tried my new Hyperion out against my Mead 5000 and the Hyperion is clearer, much better deffinition, and Had very little coma around the edges, especially for an eyepiece in this price range. Against my friends 9mm Nagler, it was almost as good, at least to my eyes. Yes the Nagler had a wider view and a little more sharpness with a little less coma, and twice the price.
Excellent high/medium power with any scope
I currently own the 5, 8, 13 and 21 mm models (and saving for the 36 mm. I use them in my 3 small (typical urban observer telescopes: Meade ETX 90 mm f/14, and Bushnell 127 mm f/12 Maksutovs, and 80 mm f/5 short-tube doublet refractor (***** A80-SSWT. The Hyperions look and feel big on these small scopes, but that's just about it, you can very easily get to using them without problems of handling or balancing. Optically, they do great, very honestly delivering the wide field and ample eye relief stated in the specs, and all with very good illumination and contrast. The only optical drawback is some evident, but reasonably expected and tolerable, edge distorsion when using the 13 and 21 mm in the f/5 short-tube. This is manifested by coma and spherical distortion in the outer surroundings of the viewfield, noticeable starting from around 2/3 out of the center while in the larger central region, the image is still quite excellent. I have done Moon, planets, star fields, and brighter fuzzies with the Hyperions all of it very satisfying observing. I can only imagine how they deliver in larger scopes or darker skies, but my humble experience with my urban lot of small scopes tells me these eyepieces should do very fine indeed. If buying a small basic set of Hyperions, I may suggest geting the 13, 8, and 21 or 24 mm (in that order as perhaps the most generally useful with any scope. As for myself, I tend to use 21 and 8 mm with the Maks, 13 and 5 mm in the f/5. The 5 mm gets too dim and washed out (over-magnified in the Maks while the 21 mm gives too much urban sky glow, besides edge distortion, in the short-tube.
I own the 21mm, 13mm, 8mm Badder Hyperion’s and couldn’t be more satisfied! I have done side by side comparisons with eyepieces 2-3 times there cost and the Hyperion’s have nearly matched, matched and exceeded the views of the others especially in contrast. Why use $400-$600 eyepieces for public viewings and cringe when the sticky fingered child or makeup queen are next inline to view? My Nagler’s are still #1 but the Hyperion’s make a great alternative!
8mm Hyperion Eyepiece
Outstanding eyepiece for the cost and with a good f.o.v. Works very well with b oth refractors and reflectors. Excellent workmanship. Very good objects. At the high magnification of the 8mm requires good seeing conditions. I then use either the 13mm or 17mm Hyperion. Highly recommended and outstanding quality for the price. I would rate this a 4.5+ 5 star ratings reserved for my Televue eye pieces.
