Astronomik H-Alpha 6nm CCD Filter - Canon EOS Clip

The Astronomik 6 nm H-alpha filter (a.k.a. Astronomik H-alpha 6nm CCD Clip-Filter EOS APS-C,) is an extremely narrow emission-line filter for CCD photography. The filter lets the H-alpha light of emission nebulae pass and blocks nearly the whole remainder of the spectrum where the CCD is sensitive. The Full Width at Half-Maximum (FWHM) of 6 nm is optimized for maximum contrast between the (H-alpha emitting) object and the background. The contrast gain is much higher than with our 12 nm emission line filters but you won't see as many stars in the resulting images. The design of the transmission curve makes it possible to use the filters with instruments from 1:3.75 to 1:15.

The Astronomik H-alpha-CCD (6 nm version) increases the contrast between objects, in this case between the H-alpha emission line and the skyglow background in the same way as the 12 nm version. The gain in contrast is much higher due to the smaller FWHM. The 6 nm H-alpha filter is the right choice for extremely dim objects, even in the Milky Way, and for observations from heavily light-polluted places. The Astronomik 6 nm H-alpha-CCD completely suppresses the emission lines of artificial lighting (mercury (Hg) and sodium (Na)) and skyglow. Transmission losses and chromatic distortions, which arise with other filters, only occur with Astronomik filters when extremely bright aperture ratios come into play.

Using the Astronomik 6 nm H-alpha together with the 12 nm H-alpha gives you the ability to have a maximum contrast in the Hii objects and to keep the stars in the final image. The Astronomik 6 nm H-alpha filter may NOT be used for solar observation. If you plan to do (false-)color imaging with other emission line filters, you should get the matching filters with 12 nm FWHM. Images taken with filters with differing FWHM are very difficult to combine into the final image.

About the Astronomik Clip-Filter System:
The patented Astronomik Clip-Filter System is black anodized aluminum and laser-cut on state-of-the-art modern machines. It can be inserted within seconds directly into the EOS camera body. There are no changes necessary and all lens functions (focus, screen, image stabilization) remain functional!

Almost all Canon system lenses (with the exception of the EF-S series) and all M42 and T2 lens adapters, can be used with the Astronomik Clip-Filter System. The Clip-Filter System also acts as an outstanding dust shield, which prevents the possibility of dust settling on the sensor during long time exposure (The MC-Clear filter does not have a filter effect and only acts as a dust shield.)

Note 1: For Photographers interested in daylight IR-Photography an "MC-modification" is possible for some cameras. If you are interested in this, please send us a short mail. We will give you more details. The "MC-modification" gives you no advantage for normal astrophotography!

Note 2: The Astronomik Canon EOS clip is not suitable are cameras offered before 2003 and all varieties of the Canon EOS 1D and Canon EOS 5D or 6D.

This page not very clear. This is for APS cameras only, which excludes the 6D...really really annoyed

Great filter that exceeded expectations, but....

This 6 nm H-alpha clip-in filter did an incredible job of capturing the reds in the Horsehead and Flame nebulas during the two times I've used it to date. I knew I would need to increase exposure time to get acceptable data but I didn't realize I would also need a significant boost in ISO (800 for RGB/3200 H-alpha) as well. I've not had time to process the data, so I really don't know how much I affected noise. The filter itself gets 5 stars because it does exactly what it's supposed to do and even better then I expected. However, I'm second guessing my decision to purchase the 6 nm rather than the 12 nm filter because I assume the 12 nm filter will allow more light to reach the sensor. In the same vein, focusing is quite difficult because of the amount of light that passes through the 6 nm filter. I use a Bathinov Mask but even using Sirius as my focus star, it wasn't easy.
