Vixen Mini Porta Alt-Azimuth Mount
Vixen Mini Porta Alt-Azimuth Mount
Vixen Mini Porta Mount
The Vixen Mini Porta Mount comes equipped with two fine adjustment handles for whole circle slow motion in both directions - a necessity when searching for and tracking celestial objects. In addition, the Vixen Mini Porta is a great mount for terrestrial viewing, too. Its gear drives make it a simple matter to precisely track a planet or a ship on the horizon by just turning the elevation and/or azimuth control handles.
The Porta in this Vixen mount's name stands for "portability"... and with good reason. It weighs only 6 pounds - yet will support a payload of eight. The "World-Standard" dovetail attachment system on Porta was developed by Vixen. This allows the Vixen Mini-Porta Mount to accept various dovetail mounted optical tubes and binoculars - making it a splendid travel companion for hikers, birdwatchers, traveling astronomers and more!
Words on the Vixen Mini Porta Mount
"For so many years the beginning astronomer was forced to buy a mount that was unstable and almost useless when viewing at high power. More often than not, the frustration of using an unstable mount resulted in the telescope only being used for one night and being left in a closet to collect dust. The Porta mount changes all that. It is one of Vixen's proudest designs. The combination of smooth movement, rigid design and stable platform makes your first use a pleasure and will bring you back to view more and more of the night sky." Mr. StarGuy

Good for small refractors
Pros: very lightweight and portable which is why you buy this mount vs it's heavier counterparts, acceptably stable for small refractors (I use a SV80ED carbon fiber with 1.25 inch ep's up to about 125x, smooth operation, pretty good construction except for plastic control knobs. Cons: plastic control knobs are a joke but you can buy suitable flexible control knobs for under 20 bucks for a pair if you look around. One knob broke the first night out. EP tray attaches fine but does not have slots for 2 inch ep's if you want that. I don't like tripped ep trays so no big deal to me. Overall, I'm pleased with the mount as an ultra portable set up but count on replacing the control knobs. My refractor is very light though. Larger scopes than 80mm or even a heavier 80mm with 2 inch ep's are probably not good at o er 50x.
MINI MOUNT W/MAXI PRICE
I searched for reviews on this mount before buying. The only concern expressed was the slow motions knobs. In my opinion ***** has a 5 star mount and they only deserve 2 stars. Here’s why: Key features The mount is Light and easy to use. Flexible head can be adjusted to accommodate multiple angles to your comfort. A feature I didn’t read about and should be advertised. The tools are hidden in a compartment (with use of magnets very neat. It’s sturdy and easily supports a light-weight instrument. Overall quality is great, uses components that can be replaced. Here’s the missing part of the mount that would make it a 5 star: 1 Price- It’s on the expensive side. The mount should be priced “as is” at around $100. 2 In talking to the ***** Rep the day of purchase, I asked him why the cheap slow motion handles, he advised they needed to cut costs to make the scope affordable. ***** sells the slow motion handles @ 24.95 each at the time of this review. I checked the internet and discovered most of the cheaper competitors offer the slow motion handles (cables on their systems. I was puzzled if the cables are so expensive that ***** is willing to put extremely cheap looking handles on their high quality mount they have to lose one star for this. And to make you buy them is even worse when their cheaper competitors offer it included. I’m disappointed ***** appears to be gauging their customers. 3 Confusing information about how much weight this scope will handle. This is very important to know so you can make an informed decision. I still don’t know how much it will handle. OPT’s web site states 8 pounds *****’s web site 10 lbs & the owners manual is written at 6.6 lbs. I tend to believe the owners manual my scope is almost 6 lbs so being at the max end of the weight scale made me concerned. ***** needs to make this clear. 4 On the ***** web-site is shows the scope has a five year warranty. Yet, there’s no registration card or written documentation about the warranty. Only what’s on the site which of course can be easily removed. 5 While the overall quality is very good ***** did put rivets on parts of the scope. I’m not sure why they did this when they went 90% of the way with replaceable screws and bolts. Also the ends of the legs have very cheap plastic pegs. ***** can make this a 5 star Communicate accurately the mounts capabilities. Include quality components 100% through-out the mount. Put in writing 5 year warranty. Otherwise lower the price!! I purchased this scope 11/22/08 @ OPT $192.98 (including tax
