Stellarvue SV80ST f/6 Triplet Refracting Telescope
This is a top quality Stellarvue Instrument of exquisite craftsmanship. Made implementing Stellarvues deluxe 2.5" dual speed Rack and Pinion focuser from the start, this scope boasts all around impressive parameters. No inferior mass produced scope with poor glass and sloppy mechanics this, for it is instead a premier Apochromat utilizing the absolute best of available lenses to achieve the sharpest and highest contrast of any Stellarvue scope, with mechanics to match that fine lens.
The lens in question is an 80mm F/6 fully multicoated, triple element objective lens with an Ohara FPL-53 center element. This 480mm focal length lens was crafted to the utmost of standards and specifications, guaranteeing the most splendid quality possible. The high Strehl objective is fully triple tested at Stellarvue's facilities to ensure that it performs perfectly when it reaches your hands. Each individual lens focuses light precisely, the broadband coatings on every visual surface enhancing the experience even further. These lenses combine to produce an astonishing cumulative effect of stunning quality. When used visually this scope lets you see the most vivid of stars on a velvet black night sky, celestial visions of the utmost beauty made manifest before your eyes. Meanwhile, the same coatings that enhance your visual experience so vividly also transmit more than 99% in the visual spectrum and far above and below it, utterly eliminating reflections seen on ccd images. The optics of this scope render it both a fabulous visual experience and a top notch wide field imaging platform.
This splendid telescope also comes with a fine aluminum tube and dew shield that are finished in Instrument White. The fittings for this tube and dew shield are anodized black aluminum, solid and dependable. The dew shield retracts reducing the length of the telescope when being stored. Extending the dew-shield minimizes dewing of the objective at night and serves as a glare shade during the daytime.
The top notch focuser used with this scope is many years in the making, having been designed with the same immaculate attention to detail as the fine lenses utilized in this amazing scope. This focuser is smooth and stable, and works beautifully for both imaging and visual use. This heavy duty 2.5" rack and pinion focuser is a dual speed focuser. It has an ultra-smooth (7:1 Ratio) fine focus control to attain perfect focus every time, and its internal brake system allows the user to adjust capacity. This focuser also provides a full 3.2" of travel, a nice trait as well. All of these features add up to make the Stellarvue Deluxe Dual Speed 2.5" Rack and Pinion focuser one of the finest on the market!
The SV080ST comes with two-hinged, American-made, CNC-machined aluminum mounting rings. Each ring has five screws top and bottom. Threaded holes are 1/4-20. There is one center hole, two holes spaced 1.5" apart and two holes spaced 60 mm apart. Use the optional TP14 rail for telescope mounts using the Vixen style rail or use the optional TP6 for mounts that use the larger Losmandy style rail. Upgrading My Review
I have discovered, since my previous review, that the problem with ADM's screws not fitting the holes in Stellarvue's rings was my fault. Apparently, ADM packaged at least two sizes of screws with their dovetail plate. ( I wish they had made note of that in their packaging.) Anyway, I'm upgrading this review to 5 stars. Fit and finish of the scope is supurb, as are the optics and mechanics of the focuser.
Excellent Optics. Rings Not So Much.
The scope is optically and mechanically excellent. Optics documentation indicates ,984 Strehl which I can't argue with, based on visual performance. I'm still trying to sort out why the screws that came with the ADM dovetail plate don't match all of the holes in the rings. The size or pitch of the threads in one of these items is off. One hole matches perfectly but the screws fit very tight in others, as if there's a mismatch in either the machine screws themselves, or some of the holes in the rings aren't tapped correctly. Way too much torque needed to fully seat one of the screws into the forward ring.
