ZWO ASIair Wi-Fi Camera Controller

ASiair Quick Guide

The ASIair WiFi Camera Controller is a smart WiFi device that allows you to control all ASI USB 3.0 cameras, ASI Mini series cameras, and an equatorial mount. With this device, you can plate solve, autoguide, sequence, and capture deep space images with your phone or tablet!

Key Features:

Preview & Focus In Real-Time

Independent Autoguiding & Imaging

Autoguiding with a portable imaging setup requires you to bring along a laptop, often with multiple programs installed to both successfully capture images and autoguide. Often with multiple programs installed for image capture and autoguiding. However, the ASIair is designed to handle both autoguiding and image capture at the same time so you can control everything from a single smartphone or tablet.

ASIair App

The ASIair app is available for both iOS and Android products. As long as you have a charge, you'll be able to control your entire astro-imaging setup from anywhere.

The ASIair has four USB 2.0 Ports that allow you to control up to four devices including a German Equatorial Mount.

Micro SD Card Port
The ASIair has one micro SD card port for running the operating system. A 32 GB card with the OS pre-installed comes standard and has 25 GB free for storing images.

5V DC Port
ASIair needs 5V@2.5A external power supply that connects via a micro USB port. Included with the ASIair is 12V-5V DC Converter which allows you connect to any 12V power supply or power tank.

Supported Devices

ZWO ASIair Supported Devices

The ASIair will work with all ZWO Pro, Cooled, USB 3.0 and Mini cameras. The standard USB 2.0 ASI 120 cameras are not compatible with this device. We recommend that you look into the ASI 120 Mini as an alternative guider or the ASI 120 Superspeed cameras for planetary imaging.

ZWO has tested iOptron and Sky-Watcher mounts for compatibly. But any equatorial mount supported by SkySafari will work as well.

Excellent Low Power Imaging Solution

Works as advertised. I was actually surprised on how well it does work!. I was up and imaging within a few minutes of first use. The guiding isn't as good as PHD2 yet, but I haven't had the chance to mess with the guide settings. I can't wait for polar alignment to be implemented and for the ZWO EAF to come on the market. Once those happen, this will be a dream setup. Great for remote imaging too, where you don't have access to power. This unit is a low power device so it runs on batteries very easily.

Excellent Product and Excellent Support

I have a Mac and after months of trying to make one popular freeware system work I found there was no real support. I went to another paid vendor who when their system didn’t work blamed my ZWO guide camera. I tried another popular freeware system in which my guide camera worked but my DSLR did not. After 7 posts at their support forum and getting not one knowledgeable response (over a month) I decide to try the ASIair (I have a ZWO guide camera). Buying the ASIair I found it was extremely easy to setup; a very simply user interface, but my DSLR did not work. My experience with ZWO is I’ve always had a technical support response within 24 hours regarding other gear or questions I had in general. Reporting the DSLR problem I had a reply within 24 hrs informing me my issue was escalated to higher tier support. I heard from the higher tier within 12 hours. They were very persistent in trying to figure out the problem with the DSLR. Within a total of 48 hrs I had a software/firmware beta upgrade and all my gear now works. So now I have a single vendor solution that actually has professional technical support who’s product gives me wireless remote control from my iPad, guiding, imaging, Safari GOTO capabilities, and plate-solving functionality. Some object that I must use only ZWO gear. In my experience with ZWO I have no problem with that. I could not be happier with my ASIair’s ease of use, quick and persistent support, along with more then reasonable cost. Incidentally the paid vendor that blamed my ZWO guide camera for their guiding problems, well I found that camera worked fine on another guide system. There was never anything wrong with my ZWO camera. Finally the ASIair 5G wifi works great on my 3 year old iPad.

Don't waste your time

Worst purchase I've ever made. The ASIAIR is very unreliable. The device has to rebooted 7 or 8 times before your phone or tablet can finally see the WIFI connection. Then once you're connect, the ASIAIR app says it can't connect. Once you finally connect (after an hour of trial, error, and rebooting everything several times), it may stay connected to your cameras for a few minutes, then it drops the connection and you have start over again. I can't count the number of hours and evenings I have wasted trying to get this thing to work. With every software release I'm hoping they have fixed the problems. But no luck.

Fun and useful

I received my ASIAIR device three weeks ago and right from the start I was a bit troubled. As indicated in the manual, the Wi-Fi device is set for 5G Wi-Fi networks by default and this caused me some problems. None of my devices are 5G enabled, fortunately the solution was simple. On the SD card exist a simple text file that when modified will allow the ASIAIR to boot up in 2.4G Wi-Fi mode. Like I said, simple fix but that is because I knew what to look for. Instructions for changing this script file were not included in the manual and that could lead to some serious frustrations. Outside of this minor complication, I love not having to rely on numerous cables strung everywhere!
