    ZWO ASI 1600MM-Cool (Monochrome) Camera

The ASI 1600 from ZWO is one of the finest CMOS cameras available for deep space object (DSO) imaging, and can easily be co-opted for any other kind of astrophotography as well. It boasts a superbly low read noise of 1.2e-, which means that it will gather interference and image glitches at a very slow rate during long exposures, which lets you take longer exposures to capture more data with less risk of distortion. Supporting this read noise is the extremely powerful TEC system, which permits cooling to roughly 40-45 degrees Celsius below the ambient temperature for the entire camera when powered.

    Questions & Answers

    Ask a Question
    • Could this camera also be used for solar imaging in a Ha solar scope? I'm looking to get the most bang for my buck so to speak and want a great DeepSky camera as well.

Yes, this camera would be great for solar imaging. It can shoot up to 23 frames per second at full resolution. This would be a great way to maximize the detail out solar scope.

    • ??? ???????? ??????? This is cool camera?

Yes, this camera has a thermoelectric cooling system that can run at 40-45C below air temperature.

    • ??? ???????? ??????? This is cool camera?

Thanks! At once I haven't noticed.

    • ASI-1600MC cool = color ASI-1600MM cool = mono is this mono? then title is wrong. 'ASI-1600MC COOLED MONOCHROME'

Hello, I will forward this to the internet changes department. Thank you for noticing.

    • Can I use the filter wheel I use with the ZWO 174M? Is there an electronic filter wheel for this camera? Or, is there a filter wheel that has 7 filter spaces--or even 9?

Yes, you can re-use the same filter wheel from your ZWO ASI174 camera. ZWO does not currently have a motorized filter wheel, but we carry 7+ position filter wheels from other manufacturers that are compatible. Please contact us if you have specific ques

    • Can I use the filter wheel I use with the ZWO 174M? Is there an electronic filter wheel for this camera? Or, is there a filter wheel that has 7 filter spaces--or even 9?

the ATIK FW-2 filter wheel comes with interchangeable carousels , and has a 9 position for 1.25" filters.

    • will this camera have different resolution settings like other cameras? like 1x1 2x2 or 4x4 binding.

1x1, 2x2, 3x3, and 4x4 binning are supported by the manufacturer, but this is via software binning after digital conversion, so the download speed/FPS is not improved 2x2 hardware binning is apparently supported but only at 10 bit depth.

    • Is this the newer version with the USB2 hub?

This camera has a USB 3.0 interface and comes with a USB 3.0 cord. You can plug this into a USB 3.0 cable into USB 2.0 interface on your computer and record at a slower frame-rate.

    • Is this the newer version with the USB2 hub?

The answer above does not answer the question. ZWO has come out with a new version of the ASI1600MM-Cool, replacing the guider port on the back with two USB2 ports, embedding a USB hub into the camera. Is the camera version for sale here the old ver

    • Is this the newer version with the USB2 hub?

That wasn't the question. ZWO has two units. One with an ST4 port, the other has two USB 2.0 ports in place of the ST4.

    • is a tripod included (it's unclear) and if so, what's the model number of the tripod?

This product is the same mount and tripod that comes with the Nexstar 6 and 8se. Part number for the Nexstar 6/8SE tripod is CE-93593.

    • 1. Is the temperature setting adjustable? 2. Can the fan be turned off during exposures? 3. Approximate gain (e-/ADU)?

Yes, The temperature setting is adjustable. This will be changed in the camera control software that you use. You can unplug the TEC cooler and fan during an exposure and it not will stop the camera from taking the exposure. The image will just be noisi

    • what format are the raw images ?

When you computer is connected to this camera, the software you use will record the raw images as fits files. If you are recording video the video, the file format is AVI.

    • Is there an OAG compatible with this camera? Also will 1.25" filters cover the chip? or do I need 36mm filters?

Yes, You can attach an OAG to this camera. There are several things that would need to be accounted for, such as filter wheels and back focus of the telescope that you are using. To configure the best setup for your telescope, I recommend giving us a call

    • The Zwo site shows two versions, one with a USB2 hub and one with a guider port. Which version is this?

All of the new ZWO cooled cameras have the 2 port USB hub. To guide, you would need to get ZWO's USB to ST4 adapter (https://www.optcorp.com/zwo-usb-st4-adapter.html), but the camera hub can power both the ZWO filter wheel and an uncooled ASI120 or simil

    • does this camera utilize Ascom drivers?

If you are running the camera on a PC, you need both the USB and ASCOM drivers for this camera. on a Mac, you do not need to install ASCOM, but you do need OACapture or Nebulosity software installed.

    • Can you show me the whole configuration in a diagram? I need to mount an Orion vixen refractor. The mounting screws are 6 & 1/4 inches apart

ADM does not have a diagram for this plate, but the hole pattern can be most clearly seen in this image: http://www.admaccessories.com/products/DUP.jpg. Holes and slots are down the centerline and 2" on-center (meaning that the side rows of holes are 1"

    • Is this the latest version (v3)

All of the current ASI1600 cameras we carry are the latest versions from ZWO.

    • I have a two part question: 1) is is possible to define one or more smaller regions of interest for the read-out? 2) can each individual image be externally triggered?

Sort of for question 1, unfortunately no for #2. You can select the size of the ROI from a number of different options in the camera acquisition software, but this ROI is always exactly centered on the sensor, so you would need to center your subject bef

    • Is the ADC 16 bit?

The files are 14 bit in a 16-bit space. Even though the files have a lower bit rate, the camera does have a better dynamic range than a lot of other CCD cameras due the very low read noise.

    • What is the quantum efficiency?

The Quantum Efficiency is approximately 65% for the ZWO ASI1600MM-C.

    • Is it possible to increase the frame rate by limiting the ROI ? What would be the frame rate for a resolution of ~100x100 pixels ?

Yes, ROI will increase frame rate, but the speed of your computer and USB 3.0 connection will also have an effect - not to mention the brightness of your subject. The manufacturer does not note frame rate for 100x100, but they do for 320x240. At 12 bits

    • Can I use the filter wheel with this on my Hyperstar on my 11" EdgeHD, or will it block too much of the light path? In that case, I would need to buy threaded filters to screw into the Hyperstar instead.

You could use the 5 position mini filter wheel without blocking too much (with 31mm unmounted filters) but we do not recommend using the larger 7-8 position wheel with a Hyperstar. Good flat frames will be critical to the best image quality.
