ZWO ASI-1600MC Color Pro Astronomy Camera USB 3.0

The ZWO ASI-1600MC Color Cooled version is a stunningly high-quality CMOS camera with powerful cooling and an incredibly powerful sensor for a CMOS this size. With a 16 megapixel resolution and CCD level clarity at a CMOS level cost, this camera takes affordable imaging to a new level. This immense and sustainable clarity is only refined to a greater level by the amazingly low read noise level of 1.2e-. What that means for you is that there is very little interference and a very slow rate of gain for that interference. It operates at an FPS of 28, which is incredible for an astronomy camera.

The primary difference between the Pro model and the original ASI1600 is the DDR Memory Buffer that is installed. This crucial upgrade greatly improves the reliability and consistency of the data transfer between your Camera and your computer. This is important for fully preserving the quality of the original image when transferring it to your computer for processing.

Your length of viewing time and potential viewing time is greatly extended by the Thermo-Electric cooling and built-in fan combo working in this cutting-edge new camera; the camera cooled to a maximum range of 40-45 C Degrees less than ambient temperature, which greatly works to prevent overheating. While it's still not impossible for overheating to occur if you over-strain the camera, the ASI-1600 can be used for extremely long sessions without overheating due to this effective cooling system and method. This is just another part of how adaptable this camera is; as you can set the cooling level anywhere up to that maximum of 40-45 C less than ambient- which means you can set it based on your environmental conditions as well as based on how long you intend to use the camera.

All in all, this is a CMOS Sensor using Camera that is highly affordable without any sacrifice in quality- operating at a whole new level compared to other, similar Cameras. Its range of exposure time is insane- ranging from a mere fraction of a second all the way up to just a few minutes over half an hour. What does that mean, exactly? It means that while yes, it can be used for planetary or lunar imaging- it's also fully capable of being utilized for long exposure deep space photography and imaging, as well as just about anything else you'd care to put it to. The technology at play here is leaps and bounds above what's considered standard in CMOS cameras, and it shows; to get the performance of a similar quality elsewhere, you'd have to double the price of this new camera, and in some areas, this camera might still outperform! Usable for a broad range of imaging purposes with great effectiveness, and extremely affordable, you'll find this a solid investment for a beginning in Astro-Photography!

    Questions & Answers

    Ask a Question
    • How would I go about connecting this up to my Skywatcher ED100? I Have a Moonlite focuser that is thread and a 2" and 1.25" adapter for it, but would I need some other connection? Thanks

Hello Stefan, Thank you for your question. The 1600 comes with a 1.25" nosepiece so if your focuser comes with a 1.25 adapter, you should be good to go.

    • What is the output file -- fits or raw ? Thanks

The output file format depends on the software used to take the images, but when using a software dedicated for long exposure imaging, the output is typically FITS.

    • what version of windows will the 1600's work with ?

All current versions of Windows are supported (7, 8/8.1, 10, in both 32 and 64 bit).

    • What is the recommended software to control the camera? Thanks

There are several different software programs to choose from to control this camera. Depending on what features you need, and what operating system you are running, and what kind of Imaging you are doing, we can give the best suggestion. Please give us a

    • What is the QE for this camera? Thanks

Hello, Here is a link to the QE diagram of this camera from ZWO optical: If you have any questions about this, feel free to give us a call!

    • What is the QE for this camera? Thanks

The link provided has NOTHING to do with QE. The graph shows the RELATIVE SENSITIVITY for three different colors (although the graphic label has four color bands (B, G, R and Gb(?) ), the plot actually only shows three lines and does not show the G graph.

    • Can a 2" nosepiece be used to connect the camera to the telescope? If so, is there a special nosepiece that must be purchased?

Hello, Thank you for asking this question. I would recommend this T to 2" adapter:

    • Is this 80mm f/6 Carbon Fiber Triplet OTA item used or just open box. Is there any damage.? Shall I get ES lifetime warranty on this open box item. Is this original HOYA FCD100 ED lens? what is return policy for open box item.

This item is open box, not used, and the original warranty is still in effect. This scope uses FDC1 glass and is slightly different from the FCD100 versions. The return policy for Open Box items is the same as for new items, with the full text here: htt

    • Does this camera have a shutter to take dark frames?

This sensor uses an electronic shutter, so it doesn't have means of taking dark frame by itself. you are going to have to put on the cap of your scope to shoot darks. If you are using the camera in a hyperstar configuration, you will need to take the cam

    • What adapters would be needed to fit the camera to a Hyperstar?

At the time a Hyperstar is ordered from us we determine what camera you are going to use. We forward that information to our vendor and they supply/make the appropriate camera adapter at no additional cost.

    • Dear Friend, Is power supply included? If not, what you recommend? Thank you, Túlio Aguiar

The ZWO cooled cameras do not include a power supply, however they can use almost any other power supply for a CCD camera that used a 5.5mm jack/2.1mm center positive pin connection as long as it outputs at least 2A at 12V. The Atik power supply A3-90-24

    • I am interested, BUT... do I understand correctly there is NO warranty from the manufacturer? Scary to say the least.

Good afternoon and thanks for your interest. ZWO provides a two year warranty on cameras.

    • hello, is it ok Takahashi collimating telescope for Celestron Nextar SE 6" ? Thank You

Unfortunately, no, as the collimation scope is too large to fit into the baffle tube of the 6 SE. You would be better off using an artificial star like the AZ-1600 and collimating via star test.

    • I have a celestron C8 (Nexstar evolution 8), what is the specific adaptor to have this attach to my C8? thanks

It should have come with a 1.25" nose piece that will slide into the eyepiece holder. If you don't have that adapter, you can use this one: This will thread into the 11mm thick ring that ca
