Tele Vue Gibraltar HD4 Sky Tour Mount w/ Tripod

The Gibraltar HD4 Sky Tour Mount w/ Tripod from Tele Vue Optics:

The Tele Vue Gibraltar HD4 Sky Tour Mount with Tripod is an expansion upon the Gibraltar HD4 Alt-AZ Mount. This kit includes the Sky Tour mount Computer with the tripod and mount; a notable increase in value!

This combination of a highly portable, ruggedly steady, and solidly built platform with a highly versatile and precise star computer is a fine mount upon which to place any large aperture refractor OTA of up to 4-inches.

First, let's look at the mount: Created as a steady, portable platform for all kinds of refractor OTA's with apertures ranging up to 4-inches, Tele Vue's Gibraltar HD4 Alt-AZ Mount was designed with a Tele-pod head and a beautiful, custom designed just for this model Berlebach ash wood tripod. Not only is this tripod made with large bearing surfaces and strong, thick legs able to easily handle heavy loads with minimal vibration, it's reserved design is sedate and functional above anything else. The legs can raise the altitude axis within a range of 3.5 to 5-feet, and the markings on the legs make it easy to repeatably set your preferred heights in place.

In another quality design feature, there is a wooden accessory tray tying the legs together to stabilize the entire setup, adding a firm rigidity to the mount when fully setup. The built in pier takes this design further; not only adding extra height to the mount to provide a more comfortable viewing position for the user, but also allowing whatever OTA you have mounted to be aimed at or near the zenith without any risk of hitting the tripod. Finally, there is a bubble-level integrated into the tripod base- in conjunction with the rubber tipped metal ground spikes, these features grant an added level of stability when mounted on soft ground. That's the base we're working with her; then let's tack this on. The Sky Tour is a high quality mount computer- giving you the ability to accurately and precisely locate celestial objects; aligning the mount to aim the telescope at them as you see fit, and tracking them as they slowly dance across the heavens. The controller that links to the sky tour is easy to set up with a 2-star alignment process which allows you to choose the mode and utilize whatever information you garner from the controller to either manually move the scope to the objects you're interested in, identify nearby objects you aren't familiar with, or simply give you a smooth tour of what is visible on any given night.

While certainly not a traditional 'GoTo' system, there are encoders included specifically to keep an accurate track of the changing orientation of the scope, allowing for real-time updates on coordinates as things change. What is more, any object you know the location of can have the relevant data; that is, the location, entered and the Sky Tour will tell you precisely where to move the scope to locate it. Furthermore, the Sky Tour's usability can be expanded by allowing it to interface with the TheSky Astronomy Program from software Bisque- as the Sky Tour Mount Computer is capable of connecting to a TheSky equipped pocket PC, Windows, or Apple computer. Doing so allows it to take advantage of the software's notably expanded database.
