PlaneWave 1 Meter Observatory Telescope

Designed and manufactured in the U.S.A

A History of Excellence

Built with the world-renowned foundation of the PW-1000 1 Meter Telescope, PlaneWave combines this revolutionary optical system with the innovative and revered L-Series Direct Drive mount, creating a higher standard in observatory setups.

The PlaneWave 1 Meter CDK Telescope has a dual truss design complete with Nasmyth focus ports and cooling fans for both the back of the primary mirror and for the front of the mirror. Featuring an immensely impressive focal ratio of f/6, the PlaneWave PW1000 covers a 100 mm field of view without any field curvature, off-axis coma, or astigmatism. This observatory-class system weighs in at 2600 lbs and comes standard with a backplate retaining ring ready to accept the focuser of your choice.

L-Series Mount Features:

  • Direct-drive motors on each axis for smooth, fast, and virtually silent movement of the telescope
  • Slew speeds up to 50 degrees per second
  • High-resolution encoders on each axis for precise positioning
  • Zero backlash
  • Zero periodic error
  • PointXP mount modeling software
  • Enclosed electronics

The L-Series mount combines versatility, simplicity, and affordability by combining all the technology of our Observatory class telescopes into a compact stand-alone mount. In its Alt/Az configuration, it is considerably more compact than its German equatorial counterpart, allowing a larger telescope to fit in a smaller enclosure.  Unlike German Equatorial mounts, there are no meridian flips to deal with, and no large protruding counterweights to create a dangerous hazard in a public observatory. Alt/Az is more intuitive to use and no polar alignment is needed. Besides, it is the way the pros do it!

PlaneWave PW1000 Main Features:

Direct drive motors and encoders Direct Drive motors and on-axis encoders eliminate the need for gears, thereby eliminating backlash and periodic error. With high-resolution encoders providing the feedback for the direct drive motors, not only will the telescope track without periodic error and backlash, but the mount will also counter wind gusts with precise servo feedback.
Dual Nasmyth Focus Ports

The Nasmyth focus is along the altitude axis so the telescope does not need to be re-balanced when changing equipment. Eyepieces remain at a constant height, greatly simplifying access to the telescope for public observatories.

The computer-controlled M3 mirror allows either Nasmyth port to be selected in just a few seconds.

PlaneWave 1000 Nasmyth
Rotating Tertiary Mirror The PW1000 includes an integrated rotator for the tertiary mirror with magnetic locks to position the mirror precisely at either Nasmyth focus position. The rotator can move from one port to the other in under 10 seconds.  PlaneWave PW1000 Rotating Tertiary Mirror
Lightweight Fused Silica Optics Fused Silica has a coefficient of thermal expansion six times lower than Borosilicate (Pyrex) glass, which means that as it cools down, fused silica preserves its shape to a high degree of accuracy. This translates into consistent optical performance and unchanging focus over temperature changes.  PlaneWave PW1000 Fused Silica Optics
Automated Primary Mirror Shutter Protects the primary mirror from unwanted dust and moisture with this integrated four-shutter automated system which is fully controllable with PlaneWave's PWI software.  PlaneWave PW1000 Primary Mirror Shutter

Proven PW1000 Technology

The L-Series uses the same proven technology as the CDK700 and 1-Meter PW1000 which are used in Universities around the world.
