Orion Starshoot G16 Deep Space Cooled Color CMOS Camera

The StarShoot G16 Deep Space Color Imaging Camera from Orion is a deep-sky astrophotography imaging camera based on the Panasonic MN34230PLJ 4/3-inch 12-bit CMOS chip.

The chip has 3.8 micron pixels, and a 16.2M pixel array. Multiple resolution/ aspect ratios are available in software, and the total number of pixels clocks in at 4640 x 3506.

Exposures from 0.15ms to 3600s and up to 30+ fps means you can shoot planets as well as nebulae.

The StarShoot G16 features a two-stage regulated thermoelectric cooler with fan, capable of reaching ~40º C below ambient, dramatically reducing noise.

The USB 3.0 interface provides exceptionally fast frame rates and downloads. Power for the camera electronics comes from the USB port, and the cooler is powered by an included AC adapter. A standard T-thread is cut into the front, and with an included 2-inch nozzle, you can attach the G16 camera to most all telescope configurations. A two-port USB 2.0 hub allows your filter wheel and guide camera can be wired directly to the G16, meaning you’ll only have the one USB cable running to your laptop, making cable management simple.

Comparing:  The G16 CMOS chip excels at seeing faint objects in fairly short exposures, and adjustable gain mean you can boost the sensitivity. The G16 is more affordable than the G10 but doesn't have quite the same sensitive or low noise. If you're deciding between the G10 and the G16, choose the G10 for the most sensitivity and lowest noise, but if you don't mind shooting a bit longer exposures or stacking more shots together, the G16 is more affordable.
