Product Details

  • Orion's Glass Solar Filters are a great gateway for safely viewing the wonders of the Sun! You'll be able to explore the march of giant sunspots, the clouds of glowing vapor around the Sun, and solar "granulation" detail. These filters will be able to show you all of the magnificent aspects of the Sun without damaging your precious vision.

While the Glass filters have a higher price-point than their Black Polymer Film counterparts, they provide better contrast and are far more durable due to their glass and aluminum construction. You'll be able to view, and even photograph, the Sun with a more natural yellow-orange color that we are all familiar with, rather than harsh white light.

The coating process for Orion's Solar Glass Filters begins with machine-polishing and triple-coating the glass elements with a sophisticated nickel-chromium stainless steel alloy, giving the filters a scratch-resistant surface. The filter only passes a fraction of the incoming light from the Sun, thus rejecting harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation.

Each Glass Solar Filter is mounted in an aluminum cell that slides directly over the front of your telescope. The size that is listed is the ideal diameter of the front of your telescope. The filter will fit diameters up to 1/4" smaller with the foam tape liner that is supplied.

When using a truss tube Dobsonian telescope for solar observing, always use a Light Shroud and a properly sized solar filter. When you install the Light Shroud make certain there are no gaps between the Shroud and the telescope where direct sunlight can reach the telescope mirror. When a truss tube telescope (equipped with a solar filter but no Light Shroud) is pointing near (not at) the Sun, direct sunlight can hit the mirror and focus on the solar filter or other portions of the telescope. This can lead to eye injury or damage to the telescope. Using a Light Shroud protects your telescope from peripheral sunlight.

This 6.58" filter is compatible with:

    • SpaceProbe 130ST Equatorial Reflector
    • SpaceProbe 130 Equatorial Reflector
    • StarSeeker IV 130mm GoTo Reflector
