This Orion Field Flattener was designed specifically to be used with the EON 104mm ED-X2 Refractor telescope. It is able to correct field curvature in order to eliminate misshapen stars that are near the edge of your telescope's field of view. Ultimately, you will yield an optically flat field for high-level imaging performance.
The main purpose for using field flatteners is to correct the inherent field curvature that optically fast, short focal length refractors produce for astro images. Refractors have the tendency to display bloated and misshapen stars at the edge the telescope's field, thus drastically reducing the quality of your astro image. As its name implies, a field flattener will produce a flat field with pinpoint stars across the entire field of view, giving you the best astrophotography experience.
This field flattener's 55mm backfocus distance is designed to work with most DSLR cameras without any additional extension rings, since this is the ideal backfocus distance for astrophotography. However, you will need a T-ring for the make and model of your DSLR camera in order to attach it to your refractor. Included with the Field Flattener are two interchangable camera attachment adapters:
- 1 adapter with standard M42 T-Threads
- 1 adapter with wider-format M48 T-Threads. This adapter allows optimal illumination of full-frame camera sensors and is designed to minimize vignetting.
The aluminum housing for this Field Flattener has a mechanical length of 50.2mm and comes equipped with a tapered 2" barrel, giving you the ability to securely fit in the EON 104mm ED-X2 Focuser. It is threaded for use with 2" imaging filters.
