I have had good experiences with this telescope, and it's perfectly what I wanted in every respect. The only flaw I've noticed is, in my usage, a very slight amount of coma which is consistent across the field. This could be due to a slight misalignment of the optics or to some other factor I haven't discovered yet. This is only noticeable when looking closely at stars. One shortcoming, though not a flaw, is how short the focus tube is. It limits the choices I have for filters, adapters, and so on. I knew this going into my decision.
Got this scope as a loaner for a couple of months. I have been missing it every single day after shipping it back. Today I am so glad I own this small refractor. This is the one I recommend to almost all beginners looking for a wide field, easy to use telescope as it also does not require any extra accessories!
This refractor is amazing. So light, easy to handle, and takes amazingly clear and crisp images, with very little effort...The Petzval optical train is amazing...! Guiding doesn't even need to be below 1.00" Total RMS Error...Stars are pinpoint precise across the field of view even at 1.50"+...! Very pleased with this telescope...It's true that great things come in small packages...!! Highly recommend this telescope...
After using this scope for about 7 months I feel qualified to write this review. Optics: Flawless stars with zero chromatic aberration across the whole field. Since it has a built in flattener, there is no second guessing with backfocus requirements. Slap a camera on and go. There is some purpling/bloating with a modified DSLR or with OSC, so shoot with a Lum filter, as you should anyways. Construction: No distortion from sag visible in acquisition frames, even with a heavy camera, filter wheel, and cables hanging off the back. Focuser has sturdy fine/course adjustment knobs that operate smoothly and with minimal backlash. Included scope rings are well built, no flex against the dovetail as the mount slews Versatility: Possibly my one complaint is the need to occasionally get creative with adapters to properly secure the guidescope and the camera as I switch between my OSC, DSLR, and ASI1600, and also had to get creative to mount the focuser I chose (Pegasus focus cube). After a bit of tinkering, the scope works for any style of camera. I was even able to get it to reach focus with an eyepiece for a special project. Depending on your camera, you might need to adjust the position of the dovetail to get a good DEC balance. Overall, this scope is an absolute work horse, and is my first choice to recommend to beginners considering entering this hobby.
I was looking for a small imaging scope for airline portable rig and this one fits the bill. Very smooth focuser and no need for a flattener because of the Petzval design. Even with a full frame DSLR the stars are sharp edge to edge. An excellent value!
I think the scope is an excellent example of short/fast and flat refractor. No additional pieces required for great images. Despite its small aperture the f/5 ratio brings in the light quickly It has a nice flat white finish with a smooth focuser. I added a Sesto focuser that works great. I love it!
