    Used Vixen VMC200L- 8" Modified Cassegrain OTA-SOLD

The Vixen VMC200L is a unique catadioptric optical system. It incorporates a primary mirror and a meniscus corrector just before a secondary mirror. By doing so, light is corrected twice on the optical path. The end result is that spherical aberration and field curvature are corrected to a high degree of optical performance. The Vixen VMC200L primary mirror is f/2.5; the compound optical system is f/9.75. This makes the system much more compact and portable than its competition. With the optical correction placed before the secondary mirror, the VMC200L avoids the necessity of having a corrector plate and all the dewing problems associated with a closed optical tube.

An additional key feature is the rack and pinion focusing that is placed behind the Vixen VMC200L primary mirror. The use of this focusing system eliminates the image shift associated with most other SCT systems. This is especially important when using high power magnification or astro-photography. When focusing, the image is stable and easy to adjust.

A Few Words On the Vixen VMC200L Catadioptric Telescope
"Optically, there's nothing to complain about. I saw no edge-of-field problems at all and images were crisp and well defined through the eyepiece. The f/9.75 focal ratio is noticeably faster than the typical Maksutov design and, of course, that translates into a wider true field of view with any given eyepiece. Reaching focus is easy, as there is a nice, sharp, sweet spot. And there is never any doubt when you've hit it. I felt this was important, given that the rack and pinion focuser is not currently available with a dual speed option.

Another thing I noticed was that the Vixen attracts attention. At the Star-B-Q event, attendees stopped by frequently and asked questions about it. They were very interested in the scope and very impressed after viewing through it. The large, red Vixen logo prominently displayed on the OTA gives the scope an air of superiority, and the build quality and performance lives up to its looks. The glossy white finish is durable and nice to look at, and the scope is solid throughout. The flip mirror is, in my opinion, something that could be improved on, but as it is a removable accessory, it's not really an issue. Overall, this is just a really nice, well performing telescope, and a very unique one at that. Lightweight, portable, 8 inches of aperture, fast cool down, zero image shift, and reasonably priced. I guess it may be possible to have your cake and eat it too after all!"

    Questions & Answers

    Ask a Question
    • How are the telescope focal length (1950 mm) and focal ratio (9.75) defined? Focal length is the distance from the focus to what? Focal ratio is the ratio of what to what?

Focal length is the *effective* distance from the light rays hitting the primary optic (mirror/lens) to the plane of focus. On most refractors and Newtonian reflectors, this can be measured easily by holding a tape measure against the scope and measuring

    • Will this OTA's mounting rail fit onto mounts that accept vixen or losmandy style dovetails?

This OTA has a Vixen-style dovetail on in and will fit corresponding Vixen-style or Dual D/V saddles.

    • I have an Orion Sirius mount with the Synscan V3 controller. I believe this will work with this mount. The question is how far will the skyfi network broadcast - e.g. will it reach my iPad about 75 feet from the scope inside the house (double pane glass

WiFi range is variable and based on obstructions, electromagnetic interference, and other environmental considerations. Usually, the range is considered to be ~75-100 feet, but neither the manufacturer nor OPT could guarantee that a user inside a house w
