About ATS 8-Inch Permanent Piers
A permanent pier is the best option for a permanent imaging or observing set up. Offering the absolute best stability, ATS piers can be adapted to nearly any mount available to the amateur sector. Constructed of 0.25-inch thick 6061 aluminum to reduce vibration and increase stability. With stainless steel hardware, all aluminum parts are carefully powder coated to protect your mount against the elements and damage due to rust and corrosion. A 1-inch thick base plate is heliarc welded to the pier body for a lastingly solid and very strong connection. The base plate has three slotted holes for attaching to the floor. Between the base and the tube are three aluminum side struts to protect against flexure while carrying very heavy or off-center equipment. The ATS permanent piers have a load capacity of 550 pounds.
Installing your new pier is easy. A wooden bolt pattern guide is provided to improve polar alignment of the pier and assist in proper pier placement. ATS provides three 3/4-inch stainless bolts for attaching your pier to the floor material of your choice.A recommendation from an ATS customer:
"Filling the permanent pier with a material to reduce vibration is a good idea. I have found that the 'rubber mulch' (Primarily shredded car tires) serves as an excellent fill material.... Takes approximately six bags for a 10-inch by 42-inch pier." Customer said: "... the result is a satisfying thud when you tap on the tube ...". Rubber mulch runs about 6 to 8 dollars a bag at home improvement stores and can be found in the gardening department.
Additional ATS Pier Options
Pre-Shipment: Choose to have your pier base, bolts and wooden guide shipped ahead of the completed pier. Allows for ample time to properly install the pier base. This option is $50 to cover the separate additional shipping and handling. Should you choose not to pre-ship your base, it will be included with the delivery of the pier.
Poly Coat: ATS offers a clear polyurethane overcoat for all of their piers at the additional cost of $100. It offers added protection against the elements, particularly fading due to UV exposure. Because permanent piers are permanently fixed into place, the clear poly coat is highly recommended even if your observatory or shed will be well covered.
Pier Colors: If glossy white isn't your thing, ATS will powder coat your pier in a variety of stock colors or in any custom color of powder coating you would like.
ATS Standard Colors:
- Astro-Physics Creme: The off-white color match used on their quality mounts.
- Gloss Black: Slick, clean, and ultra-dark.
- Graphite Grey: Contrast compromise, offered in smooth or textured.
ATS Alternative Colors:
- Silver Flake: A fantastic metallic, that shines in the sun with a lightly-glittered look. This choice requires a clear overcoat ($100).
- Meade Blue: The dark blue color match to their LX series telescopes.
- Tinfoil Silver: The shade of gray that matches the Mathis mounts. This choice requires a custom color charge ($100).
*About ordering custom color powder coat. * Custom requests will add several weeks to the completion of a mount and is an additional charge of $100, as powder does need to be ordered ahead of production start to ensure the color arrives in time to be applied to the raw pier. ATS can order any existing color of powder coat which comes in a rainbow variety of hues. Our internet sales staff will be in contact with you if you choose custom color. Please have a swatch or link to the color requested available. Depending on the color and finish of the powder coat you choose, an additional $100 may be charged for the clear Poly Coat.
